Best for Business understand that levels of enterprise are significantly and persistently lower than average amongst certain disadvantaged groups, including some ethnic minority groups, those women facing barriers to participation, the disabled, and residents of deprived areas.
This is because these groups face informational and institutional barriers to entrepreneurship in addition to factors which may prevent business creation for the general population. This lack of enterprise is a contributing factor to inter-generational cycles of deprivation in some communities. DTI (2004) “A government action plan for small business: The evidence base”. (BERR 2008 The economic drivers of Government-Funded business support – Supporting Analysis for “Solutions for Business: Supporting Success”.
Best for Business helps to deliver on these issues nationally by working with local communities and organisations to provide very targeted sub programmes to local community groups and organisations, to tackle the issues.
Best for Business feel that it is best to have sustained direct impact with people who are prepared, rather than instant impact that can cause failure and thus deter others from taking action.
We need to build confidence and success in these deprived areas to inspire others rather than quick un-sustained figures that cause fear, failure and apprehension. To this end we will be delivering targeted community based programmes and are currently working with over 20 different groups within disadvantaged and excluded sectors.
The objective is to build a local network of real programmes providing real benefits to deliver cross community cohesion and support, run and operated by the community themselves, but supported by Best for Business programmes.
As the service is provided through an on-line format which does not rely on many of the stereo types that determine personal prejudices such as ability to travel to a venue, the car you drive, the clothes you wear, language you speak, ability to gain access to premises or affording to buy coffees.
Best for Business provides unrivalled, free access to a world of business support, information and opportunities for business people and potential business people at a pace that suites their specific needs. Thus building the confidence in their abilities to join and contribute to the community as a whole.
The objective of the programme is to provide a series of local targeted programmes through a national network which helps to eradicate inequalities by building individuals confidence levels, removing the fear of feeling out of their depth, and building real cohesion in bridging the gap between communities on a local, regional and national basis.
